Marion, Ind. - Paced by juniors Tara Breshock (Lansing, Ill./TF-South) and Traci Looby (Orland Hills, Ill./Andrew), the Saint Xavier University volleyball team surged through all four of its matches at the Indiana Wesleyan University Wildcat Invitational over the weekend in Marion, Ind. Both Breshock and Looby earned spots on the all-tournament team as the Cougars (17-13 overall) picked up wins against Indiana Wesleyan, Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.), Bethel (Ind.), and Huntington (Ind.), respectively.
In its opening match Friday against host Indiana Wesleyan, SXU had all it could handle, but came out on top winning in five games 25-30, 30-25, 34-32, 24-30, 15-12. Breshock finished the match with 17 kills for the Cougars, while sophomore libero Jenna Guide (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) finished with 20 digs. The thrilling win seemed to set the tone for the remainder of the weekend.
Senior outside hitter Jessica Buchmeier (Steger, Ill./Bloom Trail) made her return to the line-up after missing nearly a month of action with a severe ankle injury. Buchmeier led Saint Xavier with 14 kills in Friday's night win over Trevecca Nazarene University (Tenn.) 32-30, 30-16, 30-22. Breshock also played well offensively finishing with 13 kills, while Looby recorded 43 assists. Sophomore Mallory Winkler (Burbank, Ill./Queen of Peace) led the team on the defensive side with 21 digs.
The Cougars carried the momentum into Saturday defeating Bethel College (Ind.) in four games 30-28, 30-27, 27-30, 30-28 behind 16 kills by sophomore Laura Gullickson (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bishop McNamara). Breshock posted 14 kills in Saturday's first victory, while Looby provided the set-ups with 56 assists. Junior Emily Soto (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Junior College) recorded 13 digs for SXU.
A four-game match win over Huntington College (Ind.) 26-30, 30-18, 30-22, 30-26 Saturday completed the tournament sweep for the Cougars. Buchmeier and Breshock were tough offensively finishing with 15 and 14 kills, respectively. Looby posted 54 assists, while Guide recorded 16 digs.
Saint Xavier (17-13 overall, 4-1 CCAC) will take on Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) rival Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) on Tuesday, October 17, in Bourbonnais, Ill. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
