Bourbonnais, Ill. - Behind strong play from junior Paige Pedigo (Chicago Ridge, Ill./Queen of Peace), the Saint Xavier University volleyball team got some revenge for its loss earlier in the week to Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) rival Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.). The Cougars took part in ONU's Volleyball Tournament in Bourbonnais, Ill., on Friday and, despite losing their first match in four games to Columbia (Mo.) College (25-30, 17-30, 30-28, 26-30), defeated the Tigers in the late match in an impressive five-game showdown (34-32, 30-16, 28-30, 27-30, 15-10). Pedigo and sophomore setter Traci Looby (Orland Hills, Ill./Andrew) were named to the ONU All-Tournament Team following the event.
Against Columbia, Pedigo paced the Saint Xavier offensive with a team-high 11 kills, while freshman Mallory Winkler (Chicago, Ill./Queen of Peace) also stepped up big in the match finishing with nine kills and 11 digs. Senior setter Amy Stephens (Bowen, Ill./Camp Point Central) tallied 19 assists for the Cougars. On the defensive side, senior libero Stephanie Huppenthal (Cedar Lake, Ind./Hanover Central) played tough scooping up 15 digs.
In SXU's second match against host Olivet Nazarene, both Pedigo and junior Jessica Buchmeier (Steger, Ill./Bloom Trail) proved too much for ONU to handle with each racking up 20 kills in the winning effort. Looby helped set up the offensive attack with an impressive 60 assists, while Huppenthal recorded 17 digs. Pedigo also led the Cougars on defense with a team-high 28 digs to go along with her 20 kills in the match.
SXU (14-15 overall/4-2 CCAC) returns home on Sunday, October 16, to take on NCAA Division II foe Florida Southern College in a non-conference match at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The start time of the match is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
