Grand Rapids, Mich. - Junior Jessica Buchmeier (Steger, Ill./Bloom Trail) was one of just six players named to the Cornerstone University (Mich.) Golden Eagle Invitational All-Tournament Team Saturday as the Saint Xavier University volleyball team split its four matches at the Invite over the weekend picking up wins over St. Ambrose University (Iowa) and Indiana Tech in Grand Rapids, Mich. With the 2-2 outing at Cornerstone, the Cougars improve to 13-13 overall this season.

In Friday's first match against Urbana University (Ohio), SXU played well behind a team-high 20 kills from Buchmeier, but fell in the end losing the match in five games 26-30, 30-27, 26-30, 31-29, 11-15. Sophomore setter Traci Looby (Orland Hills, Ill./Andrew) finished with 52 assists for the Cougars, while senior libero Stephanie Huppenthal (Cedar Lake, Ind./Hanover Central) recorded 21 digs. Senior Carrie Mockovak (Burbank, Ill./Queen of Peace) also played tough defense for Saint Xavier with a team-high 15 total blocks (four solos).

Saint Xavier came storming back in the next match Friday defeating St. Ambrose University (Iowa) in four games 30-26, 27-30, 30-22, 30-21. Buchmeier led the Cougar offensive attack again with 18 kills, while junior Paige Pedigo (Chicago Ridge, Ill./Queen of Peace) turned in 15 kills for SXU. Looby finished with 43 assists and Huppenthal was solid as well on the defensive side with a team-high 23 digs.

On Saturday, SXU got off to a hot start in the morning winning the first two games of its opening match with Spring Arbor College (Mich.) 30-27 and 30-24. However, the Cougars could not sustain the momentum dropping the final three games 24-30, 29-31, 17-19. Pedigo led Saint Xavier both offensively and defensively with 24 kills and 32 digs, while Buchmeier stayed hot on the weekend with 20 kills and 25 digs. Looby tallied 64 assists on the match, while junior Danielle Keller (Worth, Ill./Alan B. Shepard) recorded five service aces.

The Cougars avenged the loss to Spring Arbor in its next match Saturday with a three-game win over Indiana Tech 30-23, 30-21, 30-28. Buchmeier finished with a team-high nine kills in the winning effort, while Mockovak tallied seven kills and seven total blocks (three solos). Huppenthal led Saint Xavier in digs with 26, while senior setter Amy Stephens (Bowen, Ill./Camp Point Central) had 32 assists and 23 digs.

SXU (13-13 overall/4-1 CCAC) gets back to its Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) schedule on Tuesday, October 11, with a huge home match against league-leading Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) at the Shannon Center. Start time for the match is set at 7 p.m.
