CHICAGO - The Saint Xavier University baseball team picked up two wins over the weekend during its four-game series with non-conference opponent Aquinas College (Mich.) in Grand Rapids, Mich. The Cougars fell in their first game Saturday, 7-6, but rallied in game two to pick up the 7-3 win. In Sunday's doubleheader, Aquinas was able to grab the 4-1 victory, however, Saint Xavier responded by capturing the 5-3 win in the nightcap. SXU currently sits at 15-15 overall on the season.
In Saturday's first game, junior rightfielder Luke Gregerson (Lyons, Ill./Morton) finished 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI, but the Cougars fell just short despite scoring four runs in the game's final three innings. SXU outhit Aquinas in the game, 9-6, but could not overcome a five-run second inning by the Saints. Freshman lefthander Jake Curran (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) took the loss on the mound pitching six innings and giving up six hits, seven walks and seven runs (six earned).
Saint Xavier overcame a 3-0 deficit late in Saturday's second game scoring seven runs over the sixth and seventh innings to pick up the 7-3 win. Sophomore third baseman Nick Tantillo (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) finished the game 1-for-3 with a home run and three RBI, while junior shortstop Brendan Christy (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) was 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Freshman rightie Joe Zotto (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) earned the win for SXU pitching six innings and allowing five hits, four walks, and three runs (two earned), while striking out two Saint batters.
In the Cougars' first game Sunday, the offense had trouble generating hits, which led to only one run scored en route to the 4-1 loss. Christy picked up the lone RBI for SXU finishing the game 1-for-3 with a double. Aquinas scored three runs in the first inning and tacked on another in the bottom of the third, while Saint Xavier scored its run in the fourth frame. Junior southpaw Nick Karko (Alsip, Ill./Marist) took the loss pitching six innings and giving up five hits, four runs (one earned) while striking out three batters.
A three-hit performance by sophomore second baseman Craig Buske (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) paced the Cougars in the nightcap. Buske finished the game 3-for-4 with a double and a RBI, while Gregerson and Christy each turned in two hits apiece. SXU trailed 3-1 heading into final inning, but scored two runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game and force an eighth inning. The Cougars tacked on two more runs in the top of the eighth to pick up the 5-3 win. Freshman righthander Shane Longest (Wilmington, Ill./Wilmington) picked up his first win of the season on the mound going six innings and allowing seven hits and two runs with six strikeouts.
Saint Xavier will take on Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) rival University of St. Francis (Ill.) on Tuesday, April 12, for one nine-inning game starting at 7 p.m. in Joliet, Ill.
