CHICAGO - Senior centerfielder A.J. Coia (North Riverside, Ill./Riverside-Brookfield) and junior rightfielder Luke Gregerson (Lyons, Ill./Morton) drove in seven of the Saint Xavier University baseball team's 14 runs as the Cougars defeated Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Purdue University-North Central,14-0, in seven innings Friday at Ferrell Field in Chicago. The win improves SXU's overall record to 13-13 and 3-2 in CCAC play.
Coia finished the game 3-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and three RBI, while Gregerson was 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored and four RBI. In addition to Coia and Gregerson, junior shortstop Brendan Christy (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) batted 1-for-3 with three RBI and sophomore third baseman Nick Tantillo (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored. SXU hit 13 hits in the ballgame en route to its 14 runs.
Sophomore leftie Kevin White (Chicago, Ill./St. Rita) picked up the win for Saint Xavier pitching six innings and giving up five hits and no runs while striking out six PUNC batters. White improves to 2-0 on the season with the win in only his fourth appearance on the mound in 2005.
Saint Xavier takes a break from its CCAC slate this weekend with a four-game, non-conference series with Aquinas College (Mich.), scheduled to begin with a Saturday, April 9, doubleheader at 1 p.m. The series will continue on Sunday, April 10, with a second 1 p.m. doubleheader.
