Joliet, Ill. - Senior shortstop Brendan Christy (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) hit for the cycle (1B, 2B, 3B, and HR) to lead the Saint Xavier University baseball team to a 12-6 road win over Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) rival University of St. Francis (Ill.) Tuesday at Silver Cross Field in Joliet, Ill. With the win, the Cougars extend their CCAC win streak to six straight games and improve to 15-22 on the season.

Christy finished the game 4-for-7 at the plate with four runs scored and seven RBI, while senior left fielder Chris Gruber (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) and freshman centerfielder Don Skelly (Oak Lawn, Ill./Marist) each finished with four hits. SXU belted 15 hits in the game en route to its 12-run output. Sophomore righthander Shane Longest (Wilmington, Ill./Wilmington) got the win in relief of sophomore starter Kyle Zilis (Oak Forest, Ill./Marist). Zilis pitched the first three innings and allowed three hits, four runs, and six walks with two strikeouts, while Longest threw the next five innings and gave up six hits, two runs (no earned), and a walk with two Ks.

SXU got a run in the first inning on a RBI fielder's choice by junior catcher Ryan Buchler (Schererville, Ind./South Suburban CC). The Cougars tacked on four more runs in the top of the second behind a three-RBI triple by Christy followed by a RBI single from Gruber to take a 5-0 lead into the third inning. USF scored three runs in the bottom of the second to cut the lead to two, 5-3, and closed to within a run, 5-4, by scoring again in the fourth. After a scoreless fifth inning, Christy and Gruber recorded back-to-back RBI doubles, respectively, and Buchler capped a four-run, sixth inning with a two-RBI double to left field to build a 9-4 advantage.

The Fighting Saints added a run in the bottom of the sixth, but SXU answered again with three more runs in the seventh to pull away. Christy completed the cycle in the seventh inning with a three-run homer to centerfield. USF scored just one run over the next three innings as the Cougars took the 12-6 conference victory.

Saint Xavier (15-22 overall, 6-1 CCAC) will face University of St. Francis (Ill.) again on Wednesday, April 12, for a home rematch at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago. Start time for the nine-inning game is scheduled for 3 p.m.
