CHICAGO - For the third straight game, junior leftfielder Chris Gruber (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) led the Saint Xavier University baseball team at the plate going 3-for-4 with four RBI as the Cougars defeated Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Robert Morris College (Ill.),12-0, in seven innings Thursday at Ferrell Field in Chicago. The win puts SXU at 12-13 overall and 2-2 in CCAC play.
In addition to Gruber, senior centerfielder A.J. Coia (North Riverside, Ill./Riverside Brookfield) also had a good day with the bat recording two hits, scoring three runs and picking up a RBI, while junior shortstop Brendan Christy finished 2-for-4 with two RBI. SXU outhit the Eagles, 15-4, in the ballgame. The game ended after seven innings due to the 10+ run advantage after seven innings conference rule.
After two and a half scoreless innings to start the game, the Cougars picked up five runs in the bottom of the third behind a two-RBI single by Gruber. In the bottom of the fourth, Saint Xavier added four more runs to its total after Coia and sophomore second baseman Craig Buske (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) hit back-to-back RBI singles followed by two more consecutive RBI singles from Gruber and Christy later in the inning. Gruber walked in a run in the fifth inning to put SXU ahead, 10-0, and then RBI hits by Buske and sophomore catcher Brian Grupp (Granger, Ind./Mishawaka Penn) in the sixth sealed the Eagles' fate.
Freshman leftie Kyle Zilis (Oak Forest, Ill./Marist) earned the win on the mound for the Cougars pitching all seven innings and allowing just four hits and two walks while striking out four RMC batters. Zilis improves to 3-2 on the season and picks up his first collegiate complete-game shutout.
Saint Xavier continues its CCAC slate on Friday, April 8, with a nine-inning home game against Purdue-North Central (Ind.). Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
