Bourbonnais, Ill. - Despite three hits and a RBI by junior leftfielder Chris Gruber (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic), the Saint Xavier University baseball team dropped a tough, 13-inning Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) road game to Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.), 6-5, at Watson Field Wednesday in Bourbonnais, Ill. With the loss, the Cougars fall to 11-13 overall and 1-2 in CCAC play.

With the score tied 5-5 at the end of nine innings, the two teams battled through three and a half scoreless innings before Olivet was able to load the bases on three consecutive singles to open the bottom of the 13th inning. A throwing error to home plate by SXU brought the game-winning run across on a fielder's choice during the Tigers' next at-bat.

Saint Xavier led 5-0 after three innings of play scoring a run in the first and two runs apiece in the second and third frames. However, Olivet scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth and tacked on a run apiece in the eighth and ninth to force extra innings. ONU scored its game-tying run in the ninth inning on a one-out sacrifice fly by senior shortstop Michael Nastav.

Gruber finished the game 3-for-6 with a double, a run scored and a RBI, while junior rightfielder Luke Gregerson (Lyons, Ill./Morton) was 2-for-5 with a big, two-RBI single in the second inning. Senior centerfielder A.J. Coia (North Riverside, Ill./Riverside-Brookfield) and sophomore second baseman Craig Buske (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) each recorded two hits and a run scored in the ballgame.

Sophomore rightie Ryan Quigley (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) got the starting nod for the Cougars and pitched the first nine innings of the game giving up seven hits and five runs (four earned), while striking out five batters. Gregerson took over pitching duties in the final four innings and allowed six hits, three walks and one unearned run with three strikeouts.

Saint Xavier continues its CCAC slate on Thursday, April 7, with a nine-inning home game against Robert Morris College (Ill.). Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
