CHICAGO - Despite two-hit performances by junior leftfielder Chris Gruber (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) and sophomore first baseman Kevin White (Chicago, Ill./St. Rita), the Saint Xavier University baseball team could not pick up the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) victory over visiting University of St. Francis (Ill.) Tuesday falling 6-3 in Chicago. With the loss, the Cougars fall to 11-12 overall and 1-1 in CCAC play.

Gruber finished 2-for-4 on the day with a double, a run scored and a RBI, while White was 2-for-5 with a double and a RBI. Senior catcher Carlos Campos (Stickney, Ill./Morton) recorded a second-inning double to drive in SXU's first run of the game, while sophomore second baseman Craig Buske (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) led off the bottom of the ninth with a double and scored SXU's third and final run.

USF's senior designated hitter Steve Black proved to be the hero for the Fighting Saints finishing the game 3-for-3 with two, two-run home runs and a RBI single. SXU's junior southpaw Nick Karko (Alsip, Ill./Marist) took the loss on the mound pitching eight innings and giving up seven hits, six runs (four earned) and striking out seven USF batters. Although the Cougars outhit the Fighting Saints in the game, 9-8, SXU left 11 runners stranded on the bases in the game.

Saint Xavier continues its CCAC slate on Wednesday, April 6, with a nine-inning road game in Bourbonnais, Ill., against Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.). Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
