Marion, Ind. - The Saint Xavier University volleyball team picked up a win against Milligan College (Tenn.) Friday in their four matches this weekend as participants in the Indiana Wesleyan College Wildcat Invitational in Marion, Ind. The Cougars are currently 7-20 overall this season.
In its first match Friday against host Indiana Wesleyan, freshmen Tara Breshock (Lansing, Ill./Thornton Fractional South) and Kate Eckoff (Grant Park, Ill./Grant Park) each finished with six kills to pace Saint Xavier, but Indiana Wesleyan picked up the win in three games 23-30, 22-30, 32-34. Sophomore Amber Hynek (Calumet City, Ill./Andrean) recorded 14 digs in the losing effort.
In SXU's late match Friday against Milligan College (Tenn.), the Cougars jumped ahead early and never looked back en route to a three-game match win 30-25, 30-12, 30-21. Sophomore Jessica Buchmeier (Steger, Ill./Bloom Trail) finished with a team-high 12 kills for SXU.
Unfortunately, Saint Xavier could not carry the momentum into Saturday's games. Despite 10 kills from junior Carrie Mockovak (Burbank, Ill./Queen of Peace), the Cougars fell in four games to MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) 23-30, 30-28, 17-30, 20-30. Hynek finished with a team-high 13 digs in the match.
In their final match of the tourney, SXU lost to Aquinas College (Mich.) in three straight games 25-30, 22-30, 24-30. Eckoff led the Cougars in kills in the match with 10 kills, while junior Stephanie Huppenthal (Cedar Lake, Ind./Hanover Central) finished with 14 digs.
Saint Xavier will head to Palos Heights, Ill., to face Trinity Christian College for a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) match on Tuesday, October 12. Match time is set for 7:30 p.m.
