Mount Pleasant, Iowa - A 12-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback John Perryman (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards) to junior tight end Steve Miljus (Merrillville, Ind./Merrillville) with 10:54 remaining in the fourth quarter helped secure a 21-13 Mid-States Football Association (MSFA) Midwest League road victory for the Saint Xavier University football team defeating Iowa Wesleyan College Saturday at Mapleleaf Community Field in Mount Pleasant, Iowa.
The SXU offense struggled in the first half falling behind 7-0 with 1:23 left in the second quarter when IWC freshman running back Matt Cheek found the endzone on a one-yard rush. After halftime, Iowa Wesleyan tacked on another touchdown on a four-yard run by senior running back Tuan Nguyen-Rit to put the Tigers ahead, 13-0. However, on the extra-point attempt, Miljus was able to block the kick and freshman defensive back Mike Wilkinson (Chicago, Ill./St. Rita) sprinted 97 yards for the safety to bring SXU within 11 points, 13-2.
The safety seemed to provide a momentum shift for the Cougars, because sophomore wide receiver Greg Gerritsen (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) took the ensuing kick 83 yards for a touchdown to close the IWC lead to five, 13-8, after a failed two-point conversion attempt. With 4:28 remaining in the third quarter, Perryman found freshman wideout Jim Doherty (Evergreen Park, Ill./Evergreen Park) open for a 53-yard touchdown pass to give SXU its first lead of the game, 14-13. Unfortunately for Saint Xavier, Perryman could not complete his pass for the two-point conversion to widen the new lead.
Early in the fourth quarter, Perryman connected with Miljus to put SXU up for good, 21-13, following a successful extra-point attempt by senior placekicker Brad Sheehan (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central). Perryman finished the game 18-for-33 on his pass attempts for 255 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Sophomore running back Luke Schillo (Evergreen Park, Ill./Evergreen Park) had 17 carries for 48 yards on the ground, while Doherty finished with three catches for 108 yards and a touchdown. Gerritsen finished with nine catches for 97 yards, but got his lone touchdown on special teams.
The Cougars (6-4 overall, 4-2 MSFA) head to Joliet, Ill., on Saturday, November 13, to face conference foe University of St. Francis (Ill.) in the 2004 regular season finale. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
