Olathe, Kan. -- Saint Xavier University freshman Kate Eckoff (Grant Park, Ill./Grant Park) was named to the MidAmerica Nazarene University All-Tournament Volleyball Team following her impressive weekend of play for the Cougars in Olathe, Kan. SXU was able to pull out one victory at the tournament and Eckoff led the team in kills in each of their five matches. Saint Xavier stands at 5-15 overall this season and 1-2 in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) play.
In SXU's first match Friday against William Jewell College (Mo.), Eckoff totaled 11 kills, but the Cougars fell in four games 20-30, 17-30, 31-29, 21-30. Junior Carrie Mockovak (Burbank, Ill./Queen of Peace) finished with seven kills for Saint Xavier, while freshman Eileen Carls (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) tallied a team-high 14 digs.
In Friday's second match, Eckoff finished with 10 kills, however, the Cougars could not get past host MidAmerica Nazarene falling in four games 21-30, 32-30, 18-30, 16-30. Sophomore Paige Pedigo (Chicago Ridge, Ill./Queen of Peace) collected eight kills in the losing effort, while freshman Tara Breshock (Lansing, Ill./Thornton Fractional South) had 11 digs.
Saint Xavier dropped its first match on Saturday to Baker University (Kan.) in three straight games 15-30, 18-30, 16-30 despite a team-high eight kills from Eckoff. Junior Stephanie Huppenthal (Cedar Lake, Ind./Hanover Central) finished with seven digs in the match.
In SXU's fourth match of the tourney, Eckoff and Breshock each turned in 10 kills to lead the Cougars over Evangel University (Mo.) in five games 22-30, 30-17, 30-28, 14-30, 16-14. Carls finished with an impressive 18 digs in the match.
Unfortunately, Saint Xavier could not carry the momentum into its final match falling to McPherson College (Kan.) in five games 23-30, 30-25, 25-30, 30-26, 8-15. Eckoff again led the Cougars with 13 kills, while sophomore Amber Hynek (Calumet City, Ill./Andrean) collected 10 kills and a team-high 18 digs.
SXU gets back into its conference schedule on Tuesday, September 28, with a road match against Robert Morris College (Ill.) at University of Illinois-Chicago. The match is set for a 7:30 p.m. start.
