Joliet, Ill. - Junior quarterback John Perryman (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards) finished 13-for-17 for 165 passing yards and four touchdowns (one rushing) to lead the Saint Xavier University football team to a big 38-20 Mid-States Football Association (MSFA) Midwest League win over University of St. Francis (Ill.) in the 2004 season finale Saturday at Joliet Memorial Stadium in Joliet, Ill. The Cougars end the season with a 7-4 overall record and a 5-2 mark in the league, which placed them in a tie for second place with Trinity International University.

In addition to Perryman, sophomore running back Luke Schillo (Evergreen Park, Ill./Evergreen Park) led the SXU ground game attack with 74 net rushing yards, while junior halfback Tom Brown (Chicago, Ill./Mt. Carmel) tallied 67 yards on the ground along with a touchdown. Freshman wideout Jim Doherty (Evergreen Park, Ill./Evergreen Park) finished with a team-high 77 receiving yards catching just two passes, both resulting in touchdowns of 34 yards and 43 yards, respectively.

Saint Xavier jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead early in the first quarter with senior placekicker Brad Sheehan (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way) connecting on a 33-yard field goal just two minutes into the game and Doherty catching his first touchdown pass of the day with 8:15 remaining in the first quarter. However, St. Francis (Ill.) stormed right back with two touchdowns of their own over the game's next 17 minutes to take a 13-10 lead.

The Cougars were not to be outdone, however, with Brown scoring a touchdown on a two-yard run with 3:23 remaining in the first half and then sophomore wide receiver Greg Gerritsen (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) brought in a 14-yard pass from Perryman for a touchdown just 28 seconds before halftime to put SXU ahead, 24-13. After the break, Perryman extended Saint Xavier's lead to 18 points, 31-13, on a one-yard keeper with 8:38 remaining in the third quarter.

Doherty hauled in his second touchdown reception of the game in the fourth quarter to put SXU up, 38-13, with 8:50 remaining in the game. The Fighting Saints tacked on one more touchdown with 3:40 left in regulation on a one-yard run to cut the lead to 18 again, 38-20, but that was how things would end.
