Lebanon, Ill. - Despite a third-quarter touchdown connection from Saint Xavier University junior quarterback John Perryman (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards) to freshman wideout Jim Doherty (Evergreen Park, Ill./Evergreen Park), the No. 21 ranked Cougars could not pick up the Mid-States Football Association (MSFA) Midwest League road victory over No. 13 McKendree College Saturday falling 14-7 at Leemon Field. With the loss, SXU falls to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play in addition to snapping its three-game win streak.
Following a scoreless first quarter, McKendree (4-1 overall, 2-0 MSFA) put up the first score of the game when junior quarterback Brendon Delaney connected with junior wide receiver Tony Vail with 7:22 remaining in the second quarter to give the Bearcats a 7-0 halftime advantage. Saint Xavier tied the game at 7-7 with 1:44 left in the third quarter when Perryman found Doherty for the four-yard touchdown pass.
However, on the ensuing possession, McKendree took the ball down the field converting on a third-and-11 play from their own 35-yardline with a 61-yard completion from Delaney to Vail before senior safety Matt Derry (Rockford, Ill./Boylan) caught Vail at the SXU five-yardline. The Bearcats later punched it into the endzone from one yard out on a rush by junior running back Daryle Jones with 11:44 remaining in the game.
SXU had a chance to score again in the fourth quarter driving all the way down to the McKendree 18-yardline. However, on a fourth-and-16 situation with 3:38 left to play, junior wide receiver Jarrod Nowman (Manteno, Ill./Bishop McNamara) was tackled a half of a yard short of the first-down marker on a pass from Perryman. Perryman finished with 217 passing yards completing 15-of-25 passes, while junior running back Tom Brown led all rushers with 76 yards on the ground on 22 carries.
The Cougars (3-3 overall, 1-1 MSFA) returns home on Saturday, October 16, to face Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) in a MSFA Midwest League match-up. Game time is set for 1 p.m at SXU stadium.
