Women's Basketball - Sun, Nov. 21, 2004
Grand Rapids, Mich. - Freshman guard Sarah Wilson (Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington South) scored 31 points over two games to lead the No. 24 ranked Saint Xavier University women's basketball team at the Aquinas College (Mich.) Tournament this weekend at the Aquinas Fieldhouse in Grand Rapids, Mich. The Cougars (1-3 overall) won their first game Friday, 76-64, over Spalding University (Ky.), but fell in the championship Saturday to host Aquinas College, 85-72.
In addition, Wilson and sophomore guard Dani Engleman (Oak Park, Ill./River Forest) were named to the six-player, all-tournament team following the championship game Saturday. In Friday's win over Spalding, Wilson caught fire from beyond the three-point arc hitting a SXU record-tying five three-pointers en route to a team-high 20-point night. Engleman also finished in double-figure scoring for SXU with 14 points, while junior forward Jacki DiMaggio (Bartlett, Ill./Glenbard North) tacked on 12 points and seven rebounds. Senior forward Rachel Merkell (Munster, Ind./Munster) and freshman center Jennifer Stinich (Westchester, Ill./Nazareth Academy) were each tough on the boards Friday finishing with 11 and 10 rebounds, respectively.
Despite a team-high 15 points from Merkell and five players scoring in double figures, SXU could not keep pace with Aquinas College in Saturday's championship game. The Cougars dug themselves a hole in the first half falling behind 37-28 at halftime and were unable to recover from the deficit in second half action. Aquinas outrebounded Saint Xavier 45-28 in the game and scored 40 of its 85 points in the paint. Wilson and Engleman each finished with 11 points, while junior center Veronica Kristie (Willow Springs, Ill./Argo) and senior guard Sara Zembrzuski (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) contributed 10 points apiece.
Saint Xavier returns home to face No. 9 ranked Campbellsville University (Ky.) on Monday, November 22, in a rare 1 p.m. weekday match-up at the Shannon Center in Chicago.
