Hammond, Ind. - Behind a double-double performance of 16 points and 12 rebounds by junior guard Shalonda Young (Chicago, Ill./Crane Tech), the No. 7 ranked Saint Xavier University women's basketball team improved to 5-0 overall with an 110-64 victory over Purdue University-Calumet (Ind.) Saturday afternoon in Hammond, Ind. In addition, senior guard Kathlyn McClain (Oak Forest, Ill./Converse College/Marian Catholic) and senior forward Erin Hannemann (Homer Glen, Ill./Providence Catholic) each scored 17 points for the Cougars toward the winning effort. SXU was tough on the boards Saturday as well winning the rebounding battle, 63-46.
Senior guard Angie Bush (Valparaiso, Ind./Morgan Township) had a solid game off the bench for SXU scoring 12 points and pulling down four rebounds. Junior point guard Alex Barone (Joliet, Ill./Marian Catholic) was also tough recording 10 points and dishing out a game-best seven assists. The Cougars shot an impressive 51 percent (42-for-83) from the field in the game and moved the ball effectively as well to the tune of 28 assists. SXU led, 55-36, at the break and held the Peregrines to just 26 percent (9-for-35) shooting in the second half.
Saint Xavier (5-0 overall) returns to action on Tuesday, November 24, with a home game against Judson University (Ill.). The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip-off at the Shannon Center in Chicago.
