Beaver Falls, Pa. - A 70-yard, fourth-quarter touchdown reception by Saint Xavier University junior wide receiver Jarrod Nowman (Manteno, Ill./Bishop McNamara) was just enough to stifle a second-half rally attempt by Geneva College (Pa.) as the Cougars get a big Mid-States Football Association (MSFA) crossover victory Saturday night, 34-26, at Reeves Stadium in Beaver Falls, Pa. The win improves SXU to 2-2 overall this season. SXU led 27-6 at the half, but the Golden Tornado offense came alive in the third quarter scoring two touchdowns in the period to cut the lead to seven, 27-20. Geneva (1-2 overall) continued to dominate offensively heading into the fourth quarter driving inside the Saint Xavier five-yard line. However, on fourth and two, the Cougar defense got a big quarterback sack on a blitz to keep the seven-point lead.
Nowman capitalized a perfect pass from junior quarterback John Perryman (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards) to scramble 70 yards midway through the final period to put SXU up, 34-20. However, Geneva failed to throw in the towel scoring a touchdown on its next possession and then forcing an interception deep in Cougar territory on SXU's ensuing drive. Fortunately, the Saint Xavier defense was able to force and recover a fumble to seal the victory.
SXU built its 27-6 first-half lead by capitalizing on Geneva turnovers and penalties. Geneva took the early 6-0 lead on its opening possession of the game, but failed on the extra-point attempt. The Cougars lit up the second quarter scoring four touchdowns in the frame. Perryman finished 19-for-32 for 284 yards, four touchdowns and an interception, while Nowman tallied six catches for 148 yards and a touchdown. Sophomore Greg Gerritsen (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) also put together a nice outing with seven grabs for 86 yards and a touchdown.
The Cougars open their conference schedule on Saturday, October 2, with a homecoming game against William Penn University (Iowa). Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
