Joliet, Ill. - Behind a combined 24 kills by freshman outside hitter Kayla Mullaney (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community), the Saint Xavier University volleyball team split its two matches on the weekend as participants of the University of St. Francis (Ill.) Big Guns Classic in Joliet, Ill. The Cougars (13-17 overall) played both matches Saturday winning the first against Montreat College (N.C.) in three sets (25-9, 25-20, 25-23) and then dropping the second to Cornerstone University (Mich.) in four sets (25-23, 19-25, 17-25, 23-25).
In addition to Mullaney, sophomore middle blocker Kim Scudder (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community) and freshman outside hitter Kelly Knudsen (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn Community) also played well for SXU Saturday. Scudder finished with 19 total kills and seven total blocks, while Knudsen tallied 18 kills and five service aces. Sophomore setter Ashley August (LaGrange Park, Ill./Lyons Township) recorded 65 assists over both matches for the Cougars and sophomore libero Erin Sebo (Downers Grove, Ill./St. Scholastica/Downers Grove North) stood out defensively with a combined 18 digs.
Saint Xavier (13-17 overall/2-3 CCAC) hosts Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Robert Morris University (Ill.) on Tuesday, October 20. The conference match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at the Shannon Center in Chicago.
