CHICAGO - Despite seven saves by junior keeper Ashley Shugar (Lake Orion, Mich./Western Illinois University/Lake Orion), the Saint Xavier University women's soccer team lost a heartbreaker to visiting Aquinas College (Mich.) Friday at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. The Cougars dropped the game, 1-0, when junior midfielder Teresa Buiocchi scored in the game's 86th minute on an unassisted shot set up by a deflected ball in the goal box. With the loss, SXU falls to 1-2-0 overall on the season.
Freshman forward Elysha Peele (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) led the offense for the Cougars Friday finishing the game with three shots-on-goal. Aquinas finished the game with nine shots-on-goal off its 20 shot attempts, while SXU totaled seven shots-on-goal out of its 11 total shots. The Saints recorded the shutout behind seven saves by junior goalkeeper Kelsey Duley.
Saint Xavier (1-2-0 overall) wraps up play at the Saint Xavier/Judson Classic on Saturday, September 5, with a 2 p.m. match-up against Ohio Dominican University (Ohio). The first game Saturday features Aquinas College (Mich.) taking on Judson University (Ill.) at noon.
