CHICAGO - Behind a combined six goals from senior forward Angie Holmes (Shorewood, Ill./Providence Catholic) and junior forward Lissa Coby (Lake Villa, Ill./Grant Community), the No. 15 ranked Saint Xavier University women's soccer team rolled to a 9-0 victory over Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) in its regular season finale Wednesday at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. The win improves SXU's overall record to 14-3 and guarantees the team at least a share of the CCAC regular-season crown with a 7-2 league mark.
Coby scored the first three goals for the Cougars and then tacked on her fourth and final goal early in the second half in Wednesday's win. Holmes tallied her first goal with just over six minutes remaining in the first half and her second came with 13:25 to play in regulation. Also scoring goals for Saint Xavier on Wednesday were sophomore forward Ariana Robles (West Chicago, Ill./College of DuPage), sophomore midfielder Sarah Scigalski (Alsip, Ill./Mother McAuley), and freshman forward Kelcy Resa (Beecher, Ill./Beecher). Freshman defender Jessica Martinez (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg) also tallied four assists for the Cougars in Wednesday's big win. Freshman Danielle Wagner (Worth, Ill./University of Illinois) posted two saves and recorded her sixth shutout of the season.
Saint Xavier (14-3 overall/7-2 CCAC) will host a first round game in the 2006 CCAC Women's Soccer Tournament, which begins on Saturday, October 21. The Cougars will play at 11:30 a.m. at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field against a yet to be determined opponent.
