Orlando, Fla. -- Junior forward Jacki DiMaggio (Bartlett, Ill./Glenbard North) scored a game-high tying 16 points to help lead the Saint Xavier University women's basketball team to a 73-63 win over No. 18 Lindsey Wilson College (Ky.) Wednesday at the Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla. Besides DiMaggio, sophomore guard Candis Jackson (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) in only the second game of her SXU career scored 15 points and recorded a game-high six steals in the winning effort.
With the win, the Cougars improve to 3-9 overall this season. Senior guard Sara Zembrzuski (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) finished with 11 points and five assists for SXU Wednesday, while junior center Veronica Kristie (Willow Springs, Ill./Argo) also scored in double figures with 10 points in addition to collecting a team-high six rebounds. The Cougars led by two, 29-27, at the half, but used their defense to rack up 11 steals, which helped force 19 second-half LWC turnovers.
DiMaggio scored 11 of her 16 points in the second half on an impressive 5-for-7 shooting performance from the field. The Cougars led by as many as 10 points in the second half and Lindsey Wilson was able to close within three, 66-63, with two minutes to play in regulation. However, hot free throw shooting by Jackson and junior guard Jen Belmonte (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South) secured the Saint Xavier victory.
SXU will host its three-day, eight-team Christmas Tipoff Tournament beginning Monday, December 27. The Cougars will play Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) in first-round action at 7 p.m. Monday at the Shannon Center.
