Joliet, Ill. - Saint Xavier University senior left-hander Kyle Zilis (Oak Forest, Ill./Marist) was named the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Baseball Pitcher of the Week when the conference office released the weekly award Tuesday. Zilis went 2-0 overall in his two starts on the week and helped lead the Cougars to a 7-5 overall record on their annual Florida trip in the first week of the 2009 season. It was the first CCAC Pitcher of the Week honor awarded for the current season.
Zilis had a huge outing in his first start of the season last Tuesday when he blanked No. 13 ranked Embry-Riddle University (Fla.), 6-0, throwing all seven innings and allowing just one hit and a walk with 14 strikeouts. It was Zilis' first time on the mound in nearly a year after he red-shirted the 2008 season due to injury following one of his first starts last spring. It was only the second time this season that Embry-Riddle was held scoreless in its previous 23 games. He also picked up the decision in a 14-10 win over Dakota Wesleyan University (S.D.) this past Saturday.
Saint Xavier (7-5 overall) continues its 2009 campaign this weekend traveling to McKendree University (Ill.) for a four-game series before returning home to open its conference season on Friday, March 20, at 3:30 p.m. against Judson University (Ill.) at Richard Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago.
