CHICAGO - Despite a game-high 16 points from senior forward Scott Campbell (Detroit, Mich./Waubonsee CC/MacKenzie), the Saint Xavier University men's basketball team dropped its third straight Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) game Saturday with a 53-52 loss to Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) at the Keating Sports Center in Chicago. The Cougars (15-15 overall/4-6 CCAC) shot 40 percent (23-for-57) from the field in the game and were out-rebounded by the Scarlet Hawks, 37-27, in Saturday's loss. IIT improves to 7-23 overall with the victory and gets its first conference win of the season (1-9).
Freshman guard Ed Gilgenbach (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac) was the only other Saint Xavier player to score in double figures Saturday finishing with 10 points. Senior forward Rob Broughton (Elizabethtown, Ky./Gannon University) narrowly missed a double-double effort with nine points and game-high 12 rebounds. The game was knotted, 25-25, at the halftime break.
Saint Xavier (15-15 overall/4-6 CCAC) will take No. 4 seed into next week's six-team CCAC Tournament, which begins on Tuesday, March 3. The Cougars will host No. 5 seed University of St. Francis (Ill.) in first round action at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Shannon Center in Chicago.
