CHICAGO - Sophomore guard Candis Jackson (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) led the Saint Xavier University women's basketball team with 18 points as the Cougars extended their win streak to six straight games by defeating NCAA Division II Lewis University (Ill.), 66-62, Saturday at the Shannon Center in Chicago. SXU improves to 8-9 overall with the win, while Lewis University falls to 7-7.
Besides Jackson, junior forward Jacki DiMaggio (Bartlett, Ill./Glenbard North) also scored in double figures for Saint Xavier with 14 points as well as pulling down seven rebounds. Other key performers for the Cougars included: freshman forward Tara Breshock (Lansing, Ill./TF-South) with nine points and a team-high nine rebounds and senior guard Sara Zembrzuski (Lockport, Ill./Lockport), who also finished with nine points and dished out a team-high four assists. The Flyers were led by sophomore guard Mary Moskal with 19 points, while sophomore forward Darcee Schmidt chipped in 16 points and a team-high tying eight boards.
SXU got off to a slow start offensively in the first half and stared a 10-point deficit in the face, 33-23, with just over three minutes remaining in the first half. However, the Cougars closed out the half with a 6-0 run led by two big lay-ups from senior forward Lauren Novak (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) to cut the Flyer lead to just four, 33-29, at halftime. In the second half, Saint Xavier kept the game close never trailing by more than five and, with 4:39 remaining in regulation, Zembrzuski hit a three-pointer to give the Cougars' their first lead of the half, 54-53.
Lewis took back the lead on the next possession, but a three-pointer by Jackson with 2:06 remaining gave SXU back the lead, 59-57. After securing the defensive rebound on Lewis' ensuing possession, Saint Xavier got big free throws in the closing two minutes from Jackson, who converted five of her six free throw attempts down the stretch to help secure the victory.
Saint Xavier opens its 2005 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) schedule on Tuesday, January 11, with a home game against Indiana University-South Bend at the Shannon Center. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
