CHICAGO - Saint Xavier University freshman KJ Franklin (Crete, Ill./Crete-Monee) became the "Fastest Cougar" in history as he blazed to a third-place finish in the 20-team Chicagoland Championships Saturday hosted by University of Chicago at the Henry Crown Field House in Chicago. His time of 6.50 seconds for the 55-meter dash qualified him for the 2009 NAIA Indoor Track Championships in Johnson City, Tenn., from March 5-8. KJ ran a 6.61 in the prelims and needed to up his time to meet the qualifying standard of 6.53. Freshman Matt Rychel (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) narrowly missed the qualifying standard in the mile, posting a 4:24.58, his best time of the season. He was followed by freshman Brandon Hummer (Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale South), who also logged a 4:29.58. "That was a solid run by KJ," remarked SXU men's track coach Ed McAllister. "He gets faster each week and I believe that he still has his best race yet to run. However, I'll take this one. Matt was just off the standard and he still can make it. Brandon ran a longer race than he normally races and I was happy with his time." The Cougars wrap up their indoor season at the Dick Pond Invitational at Lewis University on Saturday, February 21. Running events start at 11:30 a.m. This meet is considered a "Last Chance" meet for the team, in that, all qualifying for the National Championships must be completed by this weekend.
