CHICAGO - Sophomore guard Candis Jackson (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) scored a game-high 19 points to help lift the Saint Xavier University women's basketball team to a 84-48 conference win over Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) rival University of St. Francis (Ill.) Saturday at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The swarming SXU defense collected 20 steals in the game and the Lady Saints finished with 38 turnovers. Saint Xavier improves to 13-10 overall (4-1 CCAC) with the win, while USF falls to 6-17 on the year and 1-4 in league play.
Every Cougar player on the active roster scored at least two points in Saturday's victory. Besides Jackson, two other SXU players finished with double figures in scoring. Senior forward Rachel Merkell (Munster, Ind./Munster) tallied 12 points, while senior guard Sara Zembrzuski (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) hit three big three-pointers early en route to 11 points in the game. Senior forward Lauren Novak (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) chipped in seven points and finished with a team-high six rebounds. St. Francis (Ill.) was led by junior guard/forward Amberly Callahan, who finished with 12 points and a game-high 11 boards.
Paced by Zembrzuski's treys, SXU took a quick 17-5 lead in the game's first five minutes. The Cougars took advantage of USF's 21 first-half miscues scoring 20 of their 46 first-half points off turnovers. Saint Xavier also took advantage early on inside the paint scoring 22 first-half points down low to help build a 46-20 halftime lead. The Cougars never trailed in the game and scored 27 of their 84 total points off the bench.
Saint Xavier continue their conference home stand with a game against CCAC foe Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) on Tuesday, February 1, at the Shannon Center. Olivet Nazarene currently leads the nation in scoring (91.6 ppg) and three-pointers made (13.2 tpg). Game time is set for 7 p.m.
