CHICAGO - Led by an 18-point performance from junior point guard Julian Scott (Country Club Hills, Ill./Hillcrest), the Saint Xavier University men's basketball team pulled away in the second half to claim a 76-55 victory over visiting Purdue University-Calumet (Ind.) Wednesday night at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars improve to 5-4 overall with the win, while the Peregrines drop to 1-6 overall on the year. SXU played tough defense the whole night, which helped lead to 29 turnovers in the game by Purdue-Calumet.
Scott shot an impressive 8-for-10 from the field in the winning effort and also finished with three rebounds, two assists and a steal. Senior guard Amir Resic (Prijedor, Bosnia/East-West University/Mather) had a nice night off the bench for the Cougars scoring 13 points and recording two steals. Senior guard Paris Davis (Maywood, Ill./St. Joseph) and sophomore guard Mike Johnstone (Mount Greenwood, Ill./St. Laurence) each chipped in 11 points as well for Saint Xavier. Senior forward Rob Broughton (Elizabethtown, Ky./Gannon University) led SXU on the boards with seven rebounds. The Cougars shot 45 percent (32-for-71) from the field as a team in Wednesday's victory and also did a good job of ball distribution with 16 assists.
Saint Xavier (5-4 overall) takes a few days off before continuing its home stand on Friday, December 12, against Ashford University (Iowa). The game is scheduled for an 8 p.m. start at the Shannon Center.
