CHICAGO - Behind 20 points apiece from senior guard Sara Zembrzuski (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) and junior forward Jacki DiMaggio (Bartlett, Ill./Glenbard North), the No. 25 ranked Saint Xavier University women's basketball team pulled off the 88-79 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) victory over visiting Illinois Institute of Technology on Senior Night Tuesday at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The game was dedicated to SXU senior forward and co-captain Lauren Novak (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest), who passed away last week.
In addition to Zembrzuski and DiMaggio, two other Cougars scored in double figures in Tuesday's win. Sophomore guard Candis Jackson (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) finished with 15 points, while sophomore guard Dani Engleman (Oak Park, Ill./River Forest) had a monster game off the bench with 14 points and a career-high 10 steals. Senior forward Rachel Merkell (Munster, Ind./Munster) grabbed a game-high tying 11 rebounds for the Cougars to go along with her five points. SXU took advantage of Illinois Tech's 32 turnovers recording 19 steals and scoring 35 of its 88 points off of Scarlet Hawk miscues.
IIT was led by freshman forward Shannon Waddell, who finished with a game-high 23 points and a game-high tying 11 rebounds. Sophomore forward Angie Brown also played well for the Scarlet Hawks scoring 19 points and dishing out four assists. SXU improves to 17-10 overall on the season and 8-1 in the CCAC, while IIT drops to 9-20 overall with a 2-8 league mark. The three seniors honored at tonight's Senior Night ceremony were Merkell, Zembrzuski and Novak.
The Cougars finish out their conference slate with three road games starting on Saturday, February 19, against Robert Morris College. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
