CHICAGO - Behind 19 points from senior forward Rachel Merkell (Munster, Ind./Munster), the No. 25 ranked Saint Xavier University women's basketball team defeated Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Robert Morris College, 89-42, on the road Saturday at the Gentile Center in Chicago, Ill. The win extends the Cougars' current win streak to 10 games and improves the team's record to 18-10 overall and 9-1 in league play.
In addition to Merkell, several other SXU players had solid performances in Saturday's victory. Senior guard Sara Zembrzuski (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) finished with 15 points on 6-for-10 shooting from the field. Junior forward Jacki DiMaggio (Bartlett, Ill./Glenbard North) also had a nice game with 13 points and a team-high five steals, while sophomore forward Gretchen Hendrix (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo) came off the bench to chip in nine points.
SXU came out on fire and led 44-23 at halftime. The Cougars shot 40 percent (37-for-91) from the field in the game and the defense held RMC to just 19 points in the second half.
Saint Xavier continues its conference slate with the road game against University of St. Francis (Ill.) on Tuesday, February 22. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
