Men's Basketball - Tue, Nov. 4, 2008
CHICAGO - Sophomore guard Mike Johnstone (Mount Greenwood, Ill./St. Laurence) hit seven of his 10 shots from the field and scored a team-best 21 points to lead Saint Xavier University to an 81-71 victory over Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) in the Cougar men's basketball home opener Tuesday night at the Shannon Center in Chicago. SXU also got a big all-around performance from junior point guard Julian Scott (Country Club Hills, Ill./Hillcrest), who finished with 16 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and four steals in the winning effort.

The Cougars got off to a slow start and CCSJ capitalized with hot shooting to take an early 17-10 lead in the game's first five minutes. However, the momentum would swing back toward Saint Xavier and a three-pointer by Johnstone with 8:44 to play before halftime gave SXU a 25-24 advantage. Saint Xavier led by four at the break, 40-36, and shot 53 percent (16-for-30) in the second half to carry the lead the rest of the way. The Cougars led by as many as 13 points in the second half. Johnstone also finished Tuesday's game with six steals as SXU ended the night with an impressive 18 steals as a team.

Saint Xavier (1-1 overall) heads to Palos Heights, Ill., this weekend to participate in the two-day Trinity Christian College Mitchell Classic. The Cougars will take on Cornerstone University (Mich.) on Friday, November 7, at 6 p.m. to open the event and then wraps up the tourney with a 1 p.m. game Saturday against Silver Lake College (Wis.).
