South Bend, Ind. - Despite 18 points and 14 rebounds by senior forward Rachel Merkell (Munster, Ind./Munster), the No. 25 ranked and No. 3 seeded Saint Xavier University women's basketball team could not pick up the victory falling 70-65, to Indiana University-South Bend (IUSB) in the championship game of the 2005 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Tournament Saturday in South Bend, Ind. IUSB receives the automatic bid for the NAIA National Tournament in Jackson, Tenn., beginning March 16, while the Cougars at 21-12 overall will have to wait until later this week to see if they earn an at-large bid to participate in Jackson this season.
Besides Merkell, junior forward Jacki DiMaggio(Bartlett, Ill./Glenbard North) also played well for SXU finishing with 16 points and four rebounds, while sophomore guard Candis Jackson (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) chipped in 12 points. Saint Xavier took care of the ball in the game committing just 11 turnovers compared to 17 miscues by the Lady Titans. SXU shot 40 percent (26-for-65) from the field in the game.
Down 30-27 at halftime, the Cougars played a back-and-forth game with Indiana-South Bend in the second half. With just over a minute to play, Saint Xavier clung to a two-point lead but IUSB senior guard Liz Moulis hit a three-pointer off an inbounds pass that put the Lady Titans up for good.
