Women's Basketball - Wed, Mar. 9, 2005
CHICAGO - Head coach Bob Hallberg and the No. 25 ranked Saint Xavier University women's basketball team received an at-large bid Tuesday night to participate in the 2005 NAIA Division I Women's Basketball National Championship at the Oman Arena in Jackson, Tenn. beginning Wednesday, March 16. This will be SXU's third straight trip to the National Tournament since Hallberg started the women's basketball program back in 2000. The Cougars are seeded No. 7 in their bracket and will play No. 2 seeded and No. 4 ranked Point Loma Nazarene University (Calif.) at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 17.

This season, SXU has compiled a 21-12 overall record and finished in a three-way tie for the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) regular season title with a 10-2 mark. After reaching the 600 collegiate wins mark earlier this season in a 64-61 victory over Indiana University-South Bend on February 5, Hallberg is impressed with how quickly this young program has created a tradition of success. In each of the five seasons since 2000, the Cougars have surpassed the 20-win mark averaging just over 24 wins a season.

"I think it is a fantastic accomplishment to have a five-year-old program qualifying for the national tournament three out of the five years it has been in existence," said Hallberg. "It is also amazing how many wins this team has averaged over the last five seasons. The program has made a habit of winning and I couldn't be more proud of what they have accomplished."

Saint Xavier's student radio station, WXAV 88.3 FM Chicago, will broadcast the SXU women's first round game against Point Loma live from Oman Arena. WXAV Sports Director Nick Jakusz will provide the play-by-play commentary for the game with the pre-game show set to start at approximately 12:15 p.m.
