DeKalb, Ill. - Despite team-highs of 16 points and seven rebounds by sophomore forward Jackie Heine (Hampshire, Ill./Hannibal-LaGrange College), the No. 21 ranked Saint Xavier University women's basketball team dropped its exhibition game with NCAA Division I foe Northern Illinois University, 83-63, Friday at the NIU Convocation Center in DeKalb, Ill. Junior guard Stephanie Raymond led all scorers in the game with 23 points for the Huskies.

In addition to Heine, freshman guard Abiola Amure (Chicago, Ill./St. Scholastica Academy) tallied 12 points in Friday's exhibition and junior guard Angie Brown (Sycamore, Ill./Illinois Institute of Technology) scored 10 points to round out the double-digit scorers for SXU. Sophomore forward Tara Breshock (Lansing, Ill./TF-South) also pulled down seven rebounds for Saint Xavier, while sophomore center Jennifer Stinich (Westchester, Ill./Nazareth Academy) was tough on the boards as well finishing with six rebounds.

During the first six minutes of play, both teams battled back-and-forth for control of the lead before hot shooting by Raymond helped NIU produce a 13-point advantage midway through the first half. Raymond finished the first half with 15 points on 6-for-8 shooting from the field to help give the Huskies a 46-28 halftime lead. Heine led SXU with 10 first-half points. Northern Illinois shot 53 percent from the field (17-for-32) in the first half, including a 56 percent clip from beyond the three-point arc. Saint Xavier shot 34 percent from the field (9-for-26) in first-half play, but out-rebounded NIU 20-17 and collected eight steals.

The Huskies extended their lead early in the second half using a 12-5 scoring run over the first five minutes to build a 58-33 advantage. However, the Cougars kept pace over the next 10 minutes of the game outscoring the Huskies, 18-17, during the stretch. The SXU offense continued to play tough over the final five minutes of regulation tacking on 12 points compared to just eight by Northern Illinois.

Saint Xavier officially opens its season on Tuesday, November 15, with a home game against Trinity International University (Ill.) at the Shannon Center in Chicago. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
