CHICAGO - Senior guard Sara Zembzuski (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) and freshman guard Sarah Wilson (Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington South) each tied a Saint Xavier University women's basketball record with six three-pointers in Saturday's 86-72 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) win over Illinois Institute of Technology (Ill.) at the Keating Sports Center in Chicago. With the win, SXU improves to 11-10 overall this season and 2-1 in league play, while IIT falls to 7-15 overall and 1-3 in the conference.
Zembrzuski led the Cougars with a game-high 26 points on 10-for-18 (6-for-11 from three-point range) shooting from the field, while Wilson finished with 19 points hitting six of her eight trey attempts. Zembrzuski also finished with a game-high five steals in the winning effort, while senior forward Rachel Merkell (Munster, Ind./Munster) led SXU on the boards with eight rebounds. IIT was led by sophomore forward Angie Brown, who finished with 25 points and 10 rebounds.
The Cougars shot only 39 percent (32-for-82) from the field in the game, but hit an impressive 18 of their 35 three-point attempts (51 percent). SXU's defense helped collect 19 steals and the Redhawks finished with 26 turnovers in the game.
Saint Xavier return home on Tuesday, January 25, to take on CCAC foe Robert Morris College (Ill.) at the Shannon Center in Chicago. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
