Palos Heights, Ill. - Led by team-highs of 16 points, six assists, and five steals from junior guard Dani Engleman (Oak Park, Ill./River Forest), the No. 21 ranked Saint Xavier University women's basketball team picked up a 71-58 non-conference win on the road over Trinity Christian College (Ill.) Tuesday in Palos Heights, Ill. With the win, SXU improves to 3-1 on the season, while TCC falls to 1-5 overall.
Junior guard Candis Jackson (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) also played tough for the Cougars finishing with 13 points, eight rebounds, and four steals in the winning effort. Freshman guard Abiola Amure (Chicago, Ill./St. Scholastica Academy) provided a big lift off the bench for Saint Xavier scoring 11 points and picking up four steals. The Cougar defense played well as a unit racking up 17 steals and holding the Trolls to just 33 percent shooting (21-for-63) from the field in the game.
SXU shot well in the first half (16-for-34, 47 percent) and took an early 19-8 lead in the first seven minutes of play. Trinity Christian closed to within seven at the end of the first half, 39-32. The Cougars' lead was cut to three, 44-41, in the first three minutes of the second half, but SXU went on an 8-0 run over the next two minutes to take back the double-digit lead. The Trolls were able to close within six points with just over three minutes left in the game, but an 11-4 run by the Cougars in the waning minutes sealed the victory. SXU scored 35 of its 71 points in the game off TCC turnovers.
Saint Xavier (3-1 overall) stays on the road to face NCAA Division I Chicago State University (Ill.) on Saturday, November 26. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
