Men's Track & Field - Mon, Apr. 21, 2008
Valparaiso, Ind. - For the second straight year, Saint Xavier University senior Steven Bugarin (Chicago, Ill./Washington) has qualified in the marathon for the 57th Annual NAIA Men's Outdoor Track & Field National Championships by virtue of his third place finish at the Valpo MiniMarathon on Saturday, April 19, in Valparaiso, Ind. His time of 1:13.51 easily eclipsed the qualifying standard of 1:15.00 for the 13.1-mile run. The national meet will take place from May 22-24 at Ralph Korte Stadium in St. Louis, Mo.
"The course this year had been altered from last year's and was significantly more difficult," said SXU men's track coach Ed McAllister. "However, it was obvious very early on that Steven would have little difficulty reaching the standard. Our big decision will come in a few weeks when we have to decide whether to run him in the marathon or the 10000 meter run (which he qualified in on April 4). This was a good race and we're happy that Steven did not have to expend too much effort in hitting the standard." The Saint Xavier University men's track team will now travel to Hillsdale, Mich., to compete in the Gina Relays hosted by Hillsdale College (Mich.) on Saturday, April 26. The meet is scheduled for the entire day.
