Women's Basketball - Mon, Dec. 19, 2005
San Diego, Calif. - For the second straight game junior guard Candis Jackson (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) put the No. 21 ranked Saint Xavier University women's basketball team on her shoulders late in the game. Jackson scored eight of her game-high 25 points in the final three minutes as the Cougars picked up a 80-78 victory over Baker University (Kan.) Monday in the final day of the Point Loma Nazarene University Tournament in San Diego, Calif. With the win, SXU improves to 8-3 overall, while Baker drops to 6-5.
In addition to her eight points in the final stretch, Jackson also recorded two assists, a rebound, a steal and a blocked shot in the last three minutes of play. She also led Saint Xavier with game-highs of six assists and six steals. The Cougars had three other players score in double figures in Monday's win with sophomore guard Sarah Wilson (Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington South) finishing with 14 points. Sophomore forward Jackie Heine (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) and junior guard Angie Brown (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore) tallied 11 and 10 points, respectively.
SXU got off to a slow start falling behind 14-3 in the first five minutes of the game before a 16-5 scoring run capped by a three-pointer by Wilson tied the score, 19-19, with just under 10 minutes remaining in the first half. The two teams battled back and forth for the lead for the remainder of the half with the Cougars coming out on top with a narrow 33-32 lead at the break. Baker came out firing in the second half and built a 10-point lead, 57-47, with just over 12 minutes remaining in the game.
Saint Xavier slowly chipped away at the lead over the next 10 minutes and was able to pull ahead, 75-74, with 1:34 remaining on a lay-up by Jackson. Another lay-up by Jackson and a three-pointer by Brown was enough in the final minute to secure the Cougar win. Although Baker was dominate on the boards outrebounding SXU, 61-31, in the game, SXU used tough defense again to rack up 20 steals and help force 35 Baker turnovers.
The Cougars (8-3 overall) return to action after the holiday break to host its annual, three-day Holiday Tournament beginning December 27 at the Shannon Center in Chicago. Saint Xavier will play St. Ambrose University (Iowa) in first round action at 7 p.m.
