CHICAGO - Sophomore forward Jackie Heine (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) scored a game-high tying 19 points and a team-high tying nine rebounds to lead No. 21 ranked Saint Xavier University to a 64-57 win over Saint Ambrose University (Iowa) Tuesday in first round action of the SXU Women's Basketball Holiday Tournament at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars improve to 9-3 overall and advance to the second round to face St. Vincent College (Pa.) in a 7 p.m. match-up on Wednesday, December 28.
Junior guard Candis Jackson (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) was flashy all night for SXU scoring 17 points and dishing out three assists, while freshman guard Abiola Amure (Chicago, Ill./St. Scholastica) and sophomore center Jennifer Stinich (Westchester, Ill./Nazareth Academy) each tallied 10 points. Saint Xavier shot an impressive 59 percent (13-for-22) in the second half to pull out the victory.
In other tournament action Tuesday, Caryn Inman scored 11 points to lead Madonna University (Mich.) over Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.), 64-51. Doane College (Neb.) cruised past University of St. Francis (Ill.), 73-57, behind Ashley Howard's 21 points and 13 rebounds. In the day's third game, St. Vincent College (Pa.) needed double overtime to get past Aquinas College (Mich.), 102-95. Kristen Myers and Laura Klimchock scored 32 and 29 points, respectively, for St. Vincent.
The SXU Holiday Tournament continues on Wednesday, December 28, with play starting at 1 p.m. Saint Xavier will play St. Vincent College (Pa.) in the 7 p.m. match-up with the winner advancing to Thursday's 7 p.m. championship game.
