Women's Basketball - Thu, Dec. 29, 2005
CHICAGO - Junior guard Candis Jackson (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) scored a game-high 24 points and earned all-tournament team honors by leading No. 21 Saint Xavier University to a 69-50 victory over Madonna University (Mich.) in the third place game of the 2005 SXU Women's Basketball Holiday Tournament Thursday at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars (10-4 overall) finished the game with 18 steals and helped force 31 Crusaders' turnovers in the winning effort.
Sophomore forward Jackie Heine (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) also recorded double figures for Saint Xavier with 13 points and team-high eight rebounds off the bench, while freshman guard Abiola Amure (Chicago, Ill./St. Scholastica Academy) turned in 11 points and five boards. SXU scored 30 of its 69 points off Madonna miscues. Sarah Thomson, who finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds, led the Crusaders.
The Cougars started to pull away midway through the first half and never looked back. After building a 37-28 halftime advantage, SXU kept its defensive pressure in the second half and extended its lead into double figures. Madonna used its size to win the battle of the boards out-rebounding Saint Xavier, 56-36, in the game, but the turnovers proved to be too much to overcome.
In other tournament action Thursday, St. Ambrose claimed seventh place with a commanding 70-41 win over Calumet College of St. Joseph. Jennifer Goetz led SAU with 12 points and seven rebounds. In the fifth place game, Aquinas College (Mich.) held on late to claim a 70-62 victory over University of St. Francis (Ill.) behind a game-high 17 points from Claire Hogan. The tournament championship saw Doane College (Neb.) take an early lead and never falter cruising to a 70-40 victory over St. Vincent College (Pa.). Ashley Howard and Alissa Holland each scored 16 points for the Tigers to secure the tournament title.
The 2005 Saint Xavier University Holiday All-Tournament Team included: Jamie Menzyk (Calumet College of St. Joseph), Cathy Mangan (St. Ambrose University), Kristina Yedinak (University of St. Francis), Jackie Braspenninx (Aquinas College), Sarah Thomson (Madonna University), Candis Jackson (Saint Xavier University), Laura Klimchock (St. Vincent College), Kristin Myers (St. Vincent College), Marti Blecha (Doane College), Ashley Sullwold (Doane College), and tournament MVP Ashley Howard (Doane College).
