CHICAGO - Behind a game-high 23 points from freshman guard Jason Genova (Chicago, Ill./Saint Patrick), the No. 19 ranked Saint Xavier University men's basketball team advanced to Friday's championship game of its own Midwest Tournament with a commanding 69-54 win over Aquinas College (Mich.) Thursday at the Shannon Center in Chicago. Genova shot an impressive 9-for-16 from the field, including five three-pointers, to help lead the Cougars (10-5 overall) to victory.

In addition to Genova, senior guard Jason Reiter (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) also scored in double figures for SXU with 15 points, while also dishing out a team-high five assists. Saint Xavier shot 51 percent (25-for-49) in the game and scored 19 of its 69 points off Aquinas' turnovers. Sophomore Dan Bolger (Chicago, Ill./Saint Patrick) had a team-best eight rebounds in the victory.

In other action at the Midwest Tournament, the first game of the afternoon saw St. Thomas Aquinas College (N.Y.) improve to 5-5 overall with a 114-71 win over East-West University (Ill.) (7-14). Senior center Chris Butler led the victorious Spartans with 23 points. The second game was a 69-59 Concordia University (Neb.) (5-7) win over St. Ambrose (Iowa) (6-9). Junior guard Jon Ziegler had a tournament-best 36 points for the Bulldogs in the victory.

The University of Saint Francis (Ind.) (12-4) secured a place in the SXU Midwest Tournament championship game with a thrilling 87-80 win over Siena Heights University (Mich.) (10-5) in the fourth and final game of the day. Sophomore guard Mike Steinau continued his strong tournament play as he tallied a game-high 21 points in the Cougars win.

The SXU Midwest Tournament will conclude on Friday, December 23, with four more games including the championship match up pitting University of Saint Francis (Ind.) versus Saint Xavier University (Ill.) at 6 p.m. at the Shannon Center in Chicago.
