Romeoville, Ill. - Despite 12 points from junior guard Angie Brown (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore), the No. 20 ranked Saint Xavier University women's basketball team could not overcome a slow first half start falling 84-67 to NCAA Division II Lewis University (Ill.) Thursday at Neil Carey Arena in Romeoville, Ill. The Cougars (11-5 overall, 1-0 CCAC) played much better in the second half outscoring the Flyers 42-35 after the break.

In addition to Brown, junior guard Candis Jackson (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) also scored in double figures for SXU with 11 points. Sophomore forward Jennifer Stinich (Westchester, Ill./Nazareth Academy) provided a lift off the bench with eight points and a team-high tying five rebounds. The Cougars were able to rack up 10 steals and helped to force 24 Lewis turnovers in the game, but the Flyers shot 48 percent (30-for-62) and outrebounded SXU, 51-34, Thursday.

In the first eight minutes of play, Lewis jumped out to an early 22-9 lead behind hot shooting from the outside. After swapping buckets over the next three minutes, the Flyers went on an 18-2 scoring run which built them a 39-15 advantage with four minutes remaining in the first half. Trailing 49-25 at halftime, the Cougars shot better in the second half (42 percent, 14-for-33), but were unable to trim significantly into the big deficit.

Saint Xavier (11-5 overall, 1-0 CCAC) will get back into its Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) schedule on Tuesday, January 17, with a game against Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT). Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
