Austin, Texas - Despite a team-high 13 points from freshman guard Jason Genova (Chicago, Ill./Saint Patrick), the No. 19 ranked Saint Xavier University men's basketball team could not end 2005 on a good note falling 69-50 to St. Edward's University (Texas), a NCAA Division II team, Friday in Austin, Texas. Genova also led the Cougars (11-6 overall) on the boards with seven rebounds, but SXU could not overcome shooting just 32 percent from the field (17-for-53) and committing 25 turnovers.
In addition to Genova, senior guard Jason Reiter (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) was the only other Saint Xavier player to finish the game in double figures for scoring with 10 points. For the first 15 minutes of the game, the Cougars matched up well with St. Edward's trailing 18-17 with five minutes to play before halftime. However, the Hilltoppers ended the first half with a 10-2 scoring run that put SXU behind 28-19 at the half. The scoring continued for St. Edward's through the first five minutes of the second half with Saint Xavier unable to score leading to a 41-19 deficit. A three-pointer by sophomore guard Matt Marino (Chicago, Ill./Saint Patrick) with 9:22 to play cut the Hilltopper lead to 10, 47-37, but it was as close as the Cougars would get the rest of the way. Shawn Weinstein led four St. Edward's players in double figures with 15 points.
Saint Xavier (11-6 overall) returns to action on Saturday, January 7, with a non-conference game against Trinity Christian College (Ill.) at the Shannon Center in Chicago. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.Click here for boxscore and play-by-play.
