Women's Basketball - Sat, Jan. 21, 2006
CHICAGO - Behind 15 points by junior guard Candis Jackson (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young), the No. 22 ranked Saint Xavier University women's basketball team used a big first-half scoring run to cruise to a 80-68 victory in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) action Saturday at the Gentile Center in Chicago. The Cougars improve to 13-5 overall and a perfect 3-0 in the CCAC, while the Lady Eagles drop to 8-13 overall and 0-3 in the league.

Three other SXU players scored in double figures in Saturday's win including 13 points by junior guard Dani Engleman (Oak Park, Ill./River Forest). Sophomore forward Jackie Heine (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) finished with 12 points, while junior guard Angie Brown (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore) tacked on 11 points as well as a game-high seven steals. Sophomore forward Tara Breshock (Lansing, Ill./TF-South) led the Cougars on the glass with a team-high six rebounds. Saint Xavier hit 29 of its 60 shots from the floor in the game for a 48 percent clip.

Robert Morris started strong jumping out to an early 15-6 lead in the first five minutes of play. However, SXU settled down and a lay-up by Heine off an offensive rebound gave Saint Xavier its first lead of the game, 16-15, with just over eight minutes remaining in the half helping to continue a 17-0 SXU scoring run. The Cougars kept up the solid play on both ends of the court for the remainder of the half and led 40-24 at the halftime break. In the second half, Robert Morris was able to close within seven points, but never seriously threatened the Saint Xavier lead.

SXU (13-5 overall, 3-0 CCAC) returns home to face CCAC rival University of St. Francis (Ill.) on Tuesday, January 24, at the Shannon Center in Chicago. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. Both teams come into Tuesday's game with undefeated marks in the conference standings.
