CHICAGO - Behind a school record-tying seven three-pointers and game-high 25 points, Saint Xavier University junior guard Angie Brown (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore) led the No. 22 ranked Cougars' women's basketball team to a big 91-70 victory over Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) rival University of St. Francis (Ill.) Tuesday at the Shannon Center in Chicago. With the win, SXU (14-5 overall/4-0 CCAC) moves into first place in the conference standings with a perfect 4-0 mark, while USF drops into the second spot at 4-1.
Brown was not the only Saint Xavier player to have a good outing in Tuesday's big conference victory. Sophomore forward Jackie Heine (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) came off the bench to score 24 points and pull down eight rebounds, while junior guard Candis Jackson (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) narrowly missed a triple-double performance with 18 points, 10 assists, and eight rebounds. Junior guard and team captain Dani Engleman (Oak Park, Ill./River Forest) had a solid game as well finishing with 10 points, five rebounds, and four assists.
The Cougars jumped out to an early 8-2 lead in the game's first four minutes, but the Lady Saints were able to come back and took the lead just a few minutes later. The game was tight for the first 10 minutes of play, but SXU used a 12-2 scoring run paced by nine points from Heine to take a 33-20 advantage with five minutes left in the half. Leading 46-32 at the break, Saint Xavier kept the pressure on in the second half and St. Francis (Ill.) was never able to threaten the lead. The Cougars moved the ball well in Tuesday's game dishing out 24 assists and played tough defense forcing 13 steals.
SXU (14-5 overall, 4-0 CCAC) stays at home on Thursday, January 26, to face NCAA Division II Palm Beach Atlantic University (Fla.) in non-conference action at the Shannon Center in Chicago. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
