CHICAGO - Despite 23 points and nine rebounds for senior forward Jabari Saunders (Joliet, Ill./Township West), the Saint Xavier University men's basketball team dropped a heartbreaker to No. 4 ranked Robert Morris College (Ill.), 102-99, in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) action Saturday at the Gentile Center in Chicago. The Cougars (13-8 overall/1-2 CCAC) erased a 13-point lead by the Eagles in the final two minutes of regulation, but a game-tying three-pointer at the buzzer fell short. Robert Morris improves to 18-1 overall and 3-0 in the conference.
In addition to Saunders, four other SXU players scored in double figures in Saturday's loss. Senior guard Jason Reiter (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) scored 16 points, while sophomore point guard Matt Marino (Chicago, Ill./Saint Patrick) tallied 13 points. Sophomore forward Dan Bolger (Chicago, Ill./Saint Patrick) and freshman guard Jason Genova (Chicago, Ill./Saint Patrick) each scored 12 points. Robert Morris was led by senior guard Jason Parker, who finished with a game-high 25 points. The Cougars shot 60 percent (44-for-74) from the field in the game. RMC led 51-42 at the halftime break and its 13-point lead with two minutes to play was the largest lead for either team in the game.
SXU (13-7 overall, 1-2 CCAC) returns home to face CCAC rival University of St. Francis (Ill.) on Wednesday, January 25, at the Shannon Center in Chicago. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
