Women's Basketball - Sat, Feb. 25, 2006
CHICAGO - Despite a game-high 18 points from junior guard Candis Jackson (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young), the No. 21 ranked Saint Xavier University women's basketball team could not end its regular season with a win falling, 74-68, to Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Indiana University-South Bend (IUSB) on Senior Day Saturday at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars wrap up their regular season slate with a 21-8 overall record and a league-leading 10-2 mark in the conference.

In addition to Jackson, sophomore guard Clarise Jones (Chicago, Ill./Regina Dominican) and sophomore forward Jackie Heine (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) also scored in double figures for SXU with 14 and 11 points, respectively. Sophomore center Jennifer Stinich (Westchester, Ill./Nazareth Academy) led the Cougars on the boards with eight rebounds, while Jackson also dished out a game-high five assists. Although Saint Xavier shot better than the Lady Titans from the field (42 percent versus 35 percent), IUSB took advantage of 55 rebounds (22 offensive) and 33 free throw attempts (22 made) to secure the victory.

Prior to the game, SXU honored the three senior players on the team, guard Jen Belmonte (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South), forward Jacki DiMaggio (Bartlett, Ill./Glenbard North), and center Veronica Kristie (Willow Springs, Ill./Argo). The Cougars came out of the gate quickly jumping out to an early 5-0 lead in the first minute behind a jumper by Kristie and a trey from Belmonte, respectively. IUSB got back into it quickly and fought SXU tough the entire half to take a 36-35 advantage into halftime. The second half proved to be just as tight. With just over three minutes remaining and the score tied 62-62, IUSB used rebounding and free throws to end the game on a 12-6 scoring run.

SXU (21-8 overall/10-2 CCAC) has a first round bye in the CCAC Tournament, due to its first place finish in the regular-season conference standings. The Cougars will host the second round on Thursday, March 2, at the Shannon Center in Chicago against a yet to be determined opponent. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
