CHICAGO - Paced by 17 points from sophomore guard Sarah Wilson (Bloomington, Ind./South), the No. 22 ranked and No. 1 seeded Saint Xavier University women's basketball team defeated No. 5 seed Robert Morris College (Ill.), 72-48, in CCAC semifinals action Thursday at the Shannon Center in Chicago. With the victory, the Cougars improve to 22-8 on the season and advance to the CCAC Championship on Saturday, March 4, to face No. 2 seed Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.). Start time for the championship game is set for 1 p.m.
Junior guard and 2006 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Player of the Year Candis Jackson (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) also had a big game for SXU finishing with 16 points, eight assists, and six rebounds. Junior guard Dani Engleman (Oak Park, Ill./River Forest) scored 11 points for the Cougars, while sophomore forward Tara Breshock (Lansing, Ill./TF-South) had a nice outing with eight points and seven rebounds. Shanice White, who finished with 13 points, led Robert Morris.
The first half was pretty tight with Robert Morris jumping out to an early 16-7 lead in the game's first nine minutes. However, Saint Xavier tightened up the defense and used a 17-1 scoring run over the next seven minutes to build a 24-17 advantage. With a 29-23 halftime lead, the Cougars continued to put the pressure on RMC in the second half shooting 57 percent (20-for-35) from the field after the break to help build a double-digit lead. Saint Xavier took advantage of 44 points in the paint and 27 points off RMC turnovers.
SXU (22-8 overall/10-2 CCAC) will play No. 2 seed Olivet Nazarene University for the CCAC Championship on Saturday, March 4, at the Shannon Center in Chicago. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
