CHICAGO - Senior forward and 2006 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Player of the Year Jabari Saunders (Joliet, Ill./Township West) showed why he was voted the league's best Tuesday night leading No. 3 seed Saint Xavier University (Ill.) to a 72-58 win over Indiana University-South Bend (IUSB) in first round action of the CCAC Tournament at the Shannon Center in Chicago. Saunders finished with a team-high 17 points and game-high 14 rebounds as the Cougars improved their season record to 21-10 overall with the victory.
Senior guard Jason Reiter (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) also had a solid all-around outing for SXU finishing with 15 points, six rebounds, and five assists. Sophomore guard Matt Marino (Chicago, Ill./Saint Patrick) also scored in double figures with 11 points, while junior forward James Hoffmann (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) came off the bench to contribute 10 points. Saint Xavier shot 50 percent (28-for-56) from the field on the night and outscored IUSB in the paint, 34-20. Even though the Cougars never trailed in the game, they never established a comfortable lead with the Titans able to close within six points with just under 10 minutes to play. IUSB was led by Scott McNeil, who finished with a game-high 19 points, including four three-pointers. SXU (21-10 overall/8-4 CCAC) will play the winner of tonight's first round game between No. 2 seed Robert Morris College and No. 7 seeded Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT). If RMC wins Tuesday's game, the Eagles will host Saint Xavier University on Thursday, March 2. The start time for Thursday's game has yet to be announced.
