Joliet, Ill. - Saint Xavier University senior right fielder/relief pitcher Luke Gregerson (Lyons, Ill./Morton) put an exclamation point on his big week of baseball by sweeping Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) and NAIA Region VII Player and Pitcher of the Week honors when the league office released the winners Tuesday. Although the Cougars only managed to play two games last week due to weather conditions, Gregerson was very influencial in the pair of victories both at the plate and on the mound.
Gregerson had a hot bat going 6-for-10 over the two-game stretch with two doubles, a home run, three runs scored, and eight RBI to go along with a stolen base. In the first game against Robert Morris College (Ill.), Gregerson recorded the game-tying and go-ahead RBI with a two-out, two-RBI double in the top of the ninth and SXU trailing the Eagles, 4-3. Then, in the second game against Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), he came up with a two-RBI single in the fifth and a RBI single in the seventh to help the Cougars earn the 7-4 victory.
On the mound, Gregerson was equally as tough. He came in to pitch the final two innings of the Robert Morris game and allowed just one walk with two strikeouts to earn the win (2-1) in relief. Gregerson then came in for the final out of the game against IIT and inherited the bases loaded. He was able to end the game with a strikeout to record his sixth save of the season and secure Saint Xavier's 7-4 win.
The Cougars (25-23 overall, 16-2 CCAC) head to Champaign, Ill., on Tuesday, May 2, to play a non-conference road game against the University of Illinois, a NCAA Division I opponent. Start time for Tuesday's game is 2 p.m. at Illinois Field.
