Fort Wayne, Ind. -- Sophomore forward Angie Holmes (Shorewood, Ill./Providence Catholic) scored the lone goal for the Saint Xavier University women's soccer team Saturday as the Cougars dropped their second straight game falling 2-1 to No. 25 University of Saint Francis (Ind.) at Coonan Field in Fort Wayne, Ind. With the loss, SXU falls to 8-3-0 overall on the season.
USF jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the eighth minute of the game on a shot by freshman Whitney Patterson. Saint Xavier answered in the 69th minute when freshman defender Caitlin Thornburg (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) provided Holmes with an assist for the game-tying goal. Unfortunately for SXU, with just under six minutes remaining in regulation, Saint Francis freshman midfielder Ashley Henry scored the game-winner. Sophomore goalkeeper Jessi Brink (Omaha, Neb./Burke) finished with 10 saves in her sixth start of the season.
The Cougars (8-3-0 overall, 2-1-0 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference) get back into conference play with a road game against Robert Morris College on Wednesday, September 29 at the University of Illinois-Chicago soccer field. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
